Source: Entrepinayship on a mission to empower Filipina, other Asian American Pacific Islander, and immigrant women to pursue entrepreneurship as a vehicle for self-determination and economic independence in a community of belonging.
"For aspiring business owners, I offer four major lessons:
1. Stay true to your purpose and lead from that place daily.
2. Surround yourself with a supportive community of mentors, colleagues, and allies.
3. Take action and learn from each step you take, even when it doesn’t go as planned.
4. Persevere. The worst thing you can do is give up. Always ask yourself, “Can I live with the problem continuing that my business seeks to solve?”
Keeping these principles in mind will help you prioritize, stay motivated, and make progress towards your goals.

Meet Kathy Tan, founder of Amalu Coaching, LLC.
Kathy Tan is a personal and professional development coach, founder of an early-stage startup, and social entrepreneur. She empowers BIPOC women, survivors of domestic violence, family and friends of survivors, and mid-career professionals through personalized coaching programs, community support groups, and a self-empowerment tech tool (currently in development).
Her business is called Amalu Coaching, LLC which is a comprehensive coaching and empowerment company that offers three services to help individuals achieve their personal and professional goals. Her ideal customers are individuals or organizations committed to investing in minority/BIPOC women, particularly Filipina and AAPI individuals, who have experienced ageism, gender, and racial trauma, as well as survivors of domestic violence with at least 3-6 months of healing experience, and family members or friends of survivors.
As a social entrepreneur, she’s continually exploring new opportunities, forging fruitful partnerships, and will leverage innovative technology to better serve her clients and make meaningful contributions to the community.
As a business owner, her main concern is determining the most effective priorities on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. With numerous components to manage, it's important to ensure continuous progress while maintaining a strategic approach. This responsibility can be daunting and requires careful planning to ensure that her business continues to thrive.
In the next 5-10 years, her vision for Amalu Coaching is to scale their technology globally and make interventions that will positively impact and transform the lives of survivors of domestic violence, their children and families, and communities around the world.
Since completing the R.I.S.E program, She had the privilege of leading various speaking engagements and workshops in collaboration with local and global partners. Additionally, progress has been made on the co-development of their tech tool where we successfully conducted the first round of their four-part research focus groups in January generating valuable data and feedback from participants to inform the next phase of our product development.
Kathy Tan is a 2022 R.I.S.E alum.
