Our webinar for today has so much good content, we needed TWO HANDOUTS to share it all with you. Below is just a preview of concrete strategies for addressing racism that will be discussed. Join Annice Fisher, Ed.L.D., Kathy Tan, M.A., Sherri Travers, Ed.D. & Dr. D Tejada to talk about what to do: when you’ve acted with racism, to support survivors of an act of racism, & how to intervene when you witness racism.
Intentionality as a Love Intervention to disrupting racism in the moment
We cannot end racism or stop microaggression without acknowledging it happened, repairing the harm, and changing one’s behaviors to honor the humanity of all people. The only way to a racially just world is to heal from anything that leads us to intentionally or unintentionally perpetuate racism and to disrupt racism when we see it in action. Below are three strategies for disrupting racism in the moment.
Challenging — Directly Intervene.
Ex: Target hiring for people of color is not a form of reverse racism. Our company is focused on increasing diversity and ensuring staff reflect our world.
Reflecting — Repeat the statement and questioning.
Ex. Repeat the racist statement and ask, “Can you help me to understand what you meant by that? This sounded like a racial microaggression because …”
Questioning — Use questions to go deeper.
Ex. Can you say more? What kinds of experiences have you had that make you feel this way? How may these portrayals affect your perception?
